ABOUT ME
These areas interest me due to my work experiences before
studying for my doctorate. I held various jobs (cleaning business, managed a bakery, volunteered as a teaching assistant in an elementary school, worked in customer and corporate services for a bank). In these work experiences I found that the manager who I reported to made a big difference to how I felt about my job and myself in general. I was curious to study what it was that differentiated leaders who created conditions where I was excited about work versus those where I felt disengaged and downright resentful in some cases! I also experienced what I now know as systemic discrimination (a policy that had a negative impact on my career progression actually was one that adversely affected women more so than men). At the time I thought I wasn’t progressing because of my skills (or lack thereof) which was not the case; this, in combination with my experience of divorce, and other experiences along the way, spurred my interested in studying gender issues in the workplace.

EXPERIENCE
I am currently a Professor of Organizational Behaviour and Human
Resource Management at the Faculty of Business Administration at
Memorial University in St. John’s, NL, Canada. I received a Ph.D. in
Organizational Behaviour from Queen’s University (Kingston, Ontario) in
2003, an MBA from McMaster University (Hamilton, Ontario) in 1995 and
a BA in psychology from the University of Ottawa (Ottawa, Ontario) in
1990. During my 18-year tenure at Memorial I have served in various
administrative roles: Associate Dean, Research, Director of the PhD and
MSc programs, and Area Group Coordinator.
What does my research focus on?
My research focuses on transformational leadership, employee and leader well-being, and gender issues in organizations. My work has been published in a number of journals such as the Academy of Management Perspectives, Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, Work & Stress, Journal of Applied Psychology, Human Resource Management, and Leadership & Organization Development Journal.
Other things about me...
I provide organizational consulting on leadership, employee well-being and gender equity, where I focus on the practical application of research findings (both mine and others). Having taught at all levels (undergraduate, masters (MBA, MSc), PhD, and Executive Education) I have an appreciation of the diversity of experiences that students bring to the classroom and I constantly try new approaches to incorporate experiential learning into my teaching to engage my students as active learners.
